A comforting cheeseburger-inspired casserole made with seasoned ground beef, tender potatoes, melted cheddar, tangy pickles, and homemade burger sauce. Finished with fresh lettuce for an easy family dinner.

  • Total Time: 1 hour
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

  • For the casserole
  • 1½ lb halal-certified ground beef
  • 1½ lb potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
  • For the homemade burger sauce
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • ¼ cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • ¼ cup milk
  • ⅓ cup finely chopped dill pickles
  • For the toppings
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce
  • ¼ cup diced dill pickles
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds, optional
  • Additional burger sauce, optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9 × 13-inch baking dish.
  2. Boil the diced potatoes in lightly salted water for 8–10 minutes, until just fork-tender. Drain thoroughly.
  3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet. Cook the onion for 3–4 minutes, then add the ground beef and cook until browned. Add garlic, paprika, salt, and pepper. Cook for another minute and drain excess fat.
  4. Whisk together mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, milk, and chopped pickles.
  5. Combine the potatoes, seasoned beef, burger sauce, and 1 cup of cheddar.
  6. Transfer to the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle with the remaining cheddar.
  7. Cover loosely with foil and bake for 15 minutes. Uncover and bake for another 10–15 minutes, until heated through and the cheese has melted.
  8. Rest for 5 minutes. Finish with shredded lettuce, diced pickles, sesame seeds, and additional burger sauce if desired.

Notes

For the best texture, pre-cook the potatoes until just fork-tender and drain any excess fat from the ground beef before assembling. Use freshly shredded cheddar for smoother melting. Add the lettuce, extra pickles, and sesame seeds only after baking to keep the toppings fresh and crisp. For a halal-friendly version, use halal-certified ground beef and check the ingredients of your sauces and cheese. Store leftovers without fresh toppings in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3–4 days. Reheat to 165°F (74°C) before serving.
